Common errors

These are the messages people see most often, grouped by what you were doing. Each message is shown as MeetCap writes it, followed by what to do. If your message isn’t here, run doctor. If the problem keeps happening, report a problem.

“MeetCap has neither microphone nor system audio access, so it can’t record”
Click Open System Settings and turn on both permissions. See Permissions.

“Nobody answered the permission prompt, so recording didn’t start”
Click Allow, answer the system prompt, then start again.

“Not enough disk space to record”
Recording needs at least 2 GB free. Click Clear recordings to clear old recordings in Settings › Storage, or free up space another way.

“Can’t open the microphone”
Try another input device, or click Open Sound Settings to check it.

“Setting up speech recognition”
This isn’t an error. You can record now, and MeetCap fills in the transcript once speech recognition is ready.

“Couldn’t start recording”
Click Try again. If it happens again, run doctor.

“Only the microphone is being recorded” or “Only system audio is being recorded”
One permission is off. Click Open System Settings and turn it on. MeetCap records that part from then on.

“The microphone isn’t picking up sound”
No sound has come through for 30 seconds. Check your input device, or click Open Sound Settings.

“No audio from this computer yet”
You don’t need to do anything. MeetCap records it as soon as this computer plays a sound. In a meeting room with nothing playing, this is normal.

“No internet connection”
Recording and captions continue. If you use your own API key, summaries catch up once you’re back online.

“Recording stopped because the disk is full”
Everything recorded so far is saved. Free up space before the next meeting.

“Recording stopped because the audio cut out”
Everything recorded so far is saved. Check your input device before the next meeting.

“Your last meeting wasn’t fully processed”
MeetCap stopped before it finished processing the meeting. Everything recorded is still there. Click Finish processing.

“The minutes couldn’t be written”
The line below it says why. Fix the cause, then click Try again. If the button is Open Minutes Settings, the fix is in Settings › Minutes.

If the line says Do this
“Couldn’t reach …” Check your internet connection.
“… doesn’t accept this API key.” Enter a working API key in Settings › Minutes.
“The model … isn’t available on …” Choose another model in Settings › Minutes.
“Couldn’t read the key from the keychain.” Unlock your keychain, and choose Allow if macOS asks.
“… isn’t on this computer or is too old.” Install or update the agent.
“… didn’t finish.” Do what the agent’s error message says. For example, sign in to the agent again.
“… was stopped at the …-minute limit.” Try again.
“The minutes settings aren’t complete.” Finish the settings in Settings › Minutes.
“MeetCap isn’t fully installed.” Install MeetCap again.

“No internet connection” in the minutes area
MeetCap doesn’t write these minutes later by itself. When you’re back online, click Write English minutes or Write Chinese minutes in the minutes column.

“Transcript ready”, with “Ask your agent for the minutes”
This isn’t an error. You chose Your agent, when you ask it, so ask your agent to write the minutes. See Use MeetCap with your agent.

“This file is still in the cloud”
MeetCap is downloading the file first. If the download stops, see Files in the cloud.

“This file can’t be opened”
MeetCap can transcribe M4A, MP3, WAV, AIFF, MP4, and MOV files. Save or export the recording in one of these formats, then try again.

“… isn’t an audio or video file”
Choose an audio or video file.

“Speech recognition isn’t ready yet”
Wait until MeetCap has downloaded speech recognition, then drop the file again. To see the progress, hold the pointer over the menu bar icon, or click the icon.

“There isn’t enough disk space to transcribe …”
Free up some space, then try again.

“Can’t find your meeting library”
It may have been moved or renamed, or its disk isn’t connected. Connect the disk, or click Choose folder and select the library where it is now.

“Can’t save to your meeting library”
Check the folder’s permissions, or click Choose folder to use another folder.

“This meeting library was upgraded by a newer version of MeetCap”
You can view the library on this computer, but not change it. Update MeetCap to make changes.

“This library’s settings can’t be read”
The meetings in it are all still there. Restore the library folder from a backup.

“Speech recognition couldn’t be set up”
The rest of the message gives the reason. For example, the network connection was lost, the download server didn’t send the files, or the files were incomplete or couldn’t be saved. Fix the problem, then click Try again.
